Our Overall Approach
Culture@Rallim offers a 360° education in musical expression, movement, dramatic arts and design arts. The differences are that we incorporate expert skills, live knowledge and advanced technology. Rallim students will be in-demand creative global citizens. We also offer deep learning cultural activities from one-on-one voice coaching and instrument tuition to professional art and theatre techniques.
Cultural Hub
Pre-preparatory approach
All children are creative and sociable beings who work well collaboratively and as individuals. Each child’s creativity is celebrated. Our Cultural Hub offers a blend of play and structured learning in the arts. Rallim children benefit from tailored individual care, developing curiosity and creativity.
Creative arts, dramatic arts, musical expression and movement are integral components of the Pre-Prep child’s day with a selection of individual music tuition as well as four types of dance disciplines namely, acro-dance, ballet, modern and hip hop as well as arts and crafts and drama. Our children have dance classes in our Movement Hub which has a specifically designed sprung floor to prevent injury.
Cultural Hub
preparatory approach
Our commitment to realising our students’ potential is built around providing a balanced education that addresses their intellectual, cultural, social-emotional and physical wellbeing. This involves the establishment of centres of excellence to support both the needs of the school and the wider community. Our Junior and Senior Prep develop students into confident and enquiring minds with a strong sense of self. The Cultural Hub encourages critical thinking and grows problem-solving skills through innovative lessons.
Students may participate in various cultural disciplines that are offered at Rallim House at a supplementary cost. These programmes are outsourced to experts in the various fields and include dance, instrumental music, drama and art. Furthermore we have various music ensemble groups, a vocal group and a marimba band.
These sectors will operate from different hubs within the centre namely the Theatre of the Mind Hub, the Design Hub and the Movement Hub.
Cultural Hub
secondary approach
The Cultural Hub at Rallim encourages students to explore their talents in Art, Drama, Dance and Music through the medley of opportunities provided and housed in the Movement and Design Hubs. At Rallim, we have introduced Design Arts for students to delve into various artistic media, thus empowering them to become familiar with areas they may have never investigated but in which they discover an innate talent. Students also have the choice to join the Art Society, where they discuss all things ‘Art’, including competitions and outings.
The Theatre of the Mind Hub gives students the freedom to build their confidence when speaking whilst facilitating the 21st Century skill of communication. Not only are students afforded the opportunity to show off their acting ‘chops’ in Drama as well as in Rallim’s Shakespeare Festival, but they may also choose to enter different competitions. In addition to Trinity and Royal School’s examinations, students may exhibit their talents in Eisteddfods from Cape Town, Stellenbosch and the Western Cape.
Our Music Appreciation subject discipline fosters a love of music, which can be further explored in the Individual Learning option of Music Production as well as Vocal Ensemble, Senior Band and Senior Marimba. If students are interested in playing an instrument, there are numerous experts to guide them in the following areas: piano, guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, drums, violin, cello, double bass and vocal tuition. Additionally, lessons in ballet, hip hop, acro dance and contemporary dance round out the wide variety of cultural plates on offer.
As the poem by Jon York goes, “Music is life, that’s why our hearts have beats.”
